We are looking for an experienced and creative senior curator to lead the Royal College of Physician’s (RCP) Accredited Museum.  We are seeking someone who shares our passion for the history of medicine and who can engage the public and our members with the fascinating work of the RCP past and present.

Using your vision and ambition, you will lead and support the museum team to develop our award-winning temporary exhibitions, care for and manage our diverse collections of art and objects, and expand our popular programme of public events. You will be responsible for the strategic development of the museum and for maintaining our Accredited status. You will also need to be organised and able to manage multiple tasks, often working to tight deadlines. Confident at making decisions relevant to your role, you will be used to finding solutions to resolve challenging situations.

Reporting to the head of the library, archive and museum services department, you will be working closely with library and archive colleagues to plan and deliver the annual operational plan and budget while contributing to the development of the wider department.

Main tasks:

  • Develop and deliver our popular programme of temporary exhibitions.
  • Develop, care for and manage the museum collections, including delivering our loans programme.
  • Develop and deliver a creative and vibrant series of public events and lectures.
  • Lead and manage the museum team as well as volunteers and placement students.
  • Develop relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Financial planning and budget management.
  • Act as an advocate for the museum and its work, internally and externally.

You will need:

  • A postgraduate museum qualification and previous experience in a curatorial or collections role.
  • An expert understanding of museum best practice standards and guidelines, including the requirements of Arts Council Accreditation and Spectrum.
  • Experience of line management.
  • Experience of managing project, budgets and strategic planning.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to handle challenging situations and resolve problems.
  • Ability to manage complex and competing priorities, deadlines and demands effectively.
  • A passion for the history of medicine.
  • Experience of working in a team with multidisciplinary colleagues is desirable.
